Enginehire FAQ

I still don’t get it, how does enginehire work?

Basically the idea is you create a profile outlining who you are, what you are good at, and what you are interested in. We talk to companies that are hiring, and understand who they are looking for. Then our algorithm matches their job with every profile, and if aligns with your skills and interests, we’ll connect you directly with the company!

So why should I use this over any other job site?

Two main reasons:
1) We focus specifically on young engineers, which helps us optimize everything for this niche.
2) All you have to do is spend 10-15 minutes setting up a profile. After that, you will be automatically considered for every company we partner with, so instead of you constantly applying to jobs, the jobs will come to you. We think that’s pretty cool!

I’m not a student, is there a point to my using enginehire?

Absolutely! If you are 5-10 years out of school, or are moving into engineering from another profession, many of our opportunities will be highly relevant to you. In fact, you have a leg up because of your experience.

I’m a high school student, can I use enginehire?

Yes, definitely, however, a lot of our work is geared towards post secondary students and graduates. We do have occasional opportunities relevant to high school students, and if nothing else it will benefit you once you graduate high school!

I’m in first or second year, can I use enginehire or is this only for full time?

A significant motivating factor behind the creation of enginehire is the fact that students are not getting relevant experience in first and second year. We put a big emphasis on internships, not just full time.

The thing is, I study computer science, can I still use enginehire?

Yup! We work with companies hiring computer science students all the time, and from their perspective, you’re not too different from software engineers.

I’m not studying computer science or engineering, can I still use enginehire?

Definitely, but keep in mind almost all the companies we work with are engineering based. The good thing is they all still need people for research, finance, marketing, HR…all the functions almost every company has. If you’re interested in working at an engineering company, but in a non-engineering role, we can help!

I don’t have any experience, can I realistically find a job?

It’s a tough cycle of needing experience to get a job, and needing a job to get experience. We are trying to help break that cycle, but you can definitely help yourself by doing things like joining relevant extracurriculars, working on personal projects and learning things online.

My GPA isn’t very good, what do I do?

Some companies care a lot about GPA, but a lot of them really don’t, so it’s not the end of the world. Focus on the other things that set you apart and show you know your stuff.

How much does enginehire cost me?

Nothing!

So how do you make money?

We charge companies a placement cost if they hire you.

I’ve signed up for enginehire, now what?

Fill in your profile! It includes the usual stuff like your education and experience, but also places an emphasis on what makes you unique, and where your interests lie.

I’ve filled in my profile, now what?

Now you really don’t have to do anything. Your profile will be automatically considered for every new opportunity, and we’ll contact you when we find the perfect position for you!

How long does it usually take before I get contacted?

Hard to say unfortunately, in the past it’s ranged from a couple of hours to never. The reality is that every student is different, and it depends what companies happen to be recruiting at any given time.

How will I be contacted?

Usually email, occasionally phone.

Where are you based?

Enginehire is based in Toronto, and a majority of the candidates and companies we work with are located in Ontario, with a smaller smattering across Canada and in the States.

Why did you start enginehire?

We believe there is a lot of room for improvement in the recruitment industry, particularly for young people. Many small and midsize companies are interested in hiring young engineers, but they don’t have the HR clout necessary to effectively find you, and you’ve probably never heard of them. Not to mention we think career fairs, job portals and writing cover letters really sucks.

We still have a long way to go, but we’re working hard to get there. Thanks for your interest in enginehire, let’s grow together!
